The aim of this blog is to share with you the books I have read during my challenge to read a magic realism book a week. It has also had the unexpected benefit of helping focus my thoughts about magic realism.
I started this project because people were telling me I
wrote magic realism and to be honest I didn't know what it was. Nor, it
turns out, do a lot of people who use the term. For the purposes of the blog I have taken a very simple definition (see left), but several theses could be written on the subject (and are). Let us just say for the time being that the more I read, the
more I realise that magic realism is not a genre, but a way of
approaching writing fiction.
Most of the books featured on this blog were purchased by me. Some were given me by publishers and authors in return for an unbiased review. I also receive books via Netgalley and Edelweiss. I welcome offers of books for review, see the policies page for more information. Please read my policies page http://magic-realism-books.blogspot.co.uk/p/review-policy.html for more information.
When I began to research magic realism I discovered that not only did I write magic realism, but that I have been a fan of it for years. You will find many of my all-time favourite books on the booklist page, including One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Master and Margarita, Fludd and Good Omens.
When I started this challenge in July 2012 I set myself the target of 50 books in one year. As you can see there are now 195 books in my reading list and rising. Even with my limited mathematical ability I can see that is nearly four years of reading. For some reason although I keep reading and reviewing books the list never seems to get any shorter.
I am administrator of a magic realism group on Facebook, where we share reviews and news. Please feel free to join it here http://www.facebook.com/groups/magicrealism/ I also regularly tweet about magic realism on http://twitter.com/ZoeBrooks2
